Part of the Koolau Volcanic eruptions that created the eastern half of Oahu, Diamond Head today is a defining feature of the Waikiki shoreline and is preserved as a United States Monument. Fort Ruger, the first United States military reservation in the state, is located inside of the Diamond Head crater.
